The Foundation of How We Lead, Learn, and Grow
Our Tenets
At Leading the Way Academy, everything we do is guided by five core tenets. These aren’t just words on a page—they are the expectations, habits, and mindsets that shape how scholars show up for themselves, for each other, and for their communities.
Rooted in our mission to provide intentional academic support and leadership development, our tenets help turn potential into action and students into confident leaders.
Brother's Keeper
We succeed together, not alone.
Brother’s Keeper is about building a community where no one is left behind. It means every scholar is responsible not only for their own success, but also for the success and well-being of those around them.
This tenet is often misunderstood as being limited to boys or males—but at Leading the Way, that is not the case. “Brother’s Keeper” represents a universal commitment to unity, care, and accountability for all scholars, regardless of gender or identity. It is about choosing to show up for each other in real, intentional ways.
A Leading the Way scholar:
- Supports and uplifts peers academically and personally
- Builds healthy, respectful relationships
- Holds themselves and others accountable with care
- Leads with reliability, trust, and consistency
- Helps create a culture where no one is isolated or overlooked
Ambassadorship
Every scholar represents something bigger than themselves.
Ambassadorship means understanding that your actions speak even when you don’t. Scholars represent Leading the Way Academy both inside and outside the program.
Being an ambassador is about character, integrity, and awareness—knowing that leadership starts with how you carry yourself every day.
A Leading the Way scholar:
- Represents the program with pride and integrity
- Communicates respectfully and confidently
- Builds positive relationships in every space they enter
- Understands the impact of their behavior on others
- Lives in a way that reflects the mission of Leading the Way
Student Efficacy
We believe every student can succeed—and we help them believe it too.
Student Efficacy is the belief in your own ability to learn, grow, and achieve. Many students don’t struggle because they lack ability—they struggle because they lack confidence and support.
This tenet focuses on rebuilding that belief through academic encouragement and structured support.
A Leading the Way scholar:
- Takes ownership of their learning
- Works toward academic goals with consistency
- Participates actively in educational spaces
- Seeks help when needed and uses feedback to improve
- Builds confidence through effort and persistence
Personal Growth
Growth is a daily decision.
Personal Growth is about becoming better—not all at once, but over time. It requires reflection, honesty, and the willingness to change.
At Leading the Way, we teach scholars that growth isn’t automatic. It’s intentional.
A Leading the Way scholar:
- Sets goals and works toward them consistently
- Reflects on actions and makes improvements
- Accepts feedback and applies it
- Shows measurable progress in behavior and mindset
- Takes responsibility for their development
Servant Leadership
The strongest leaders are the ones who serve others.
Servant Leadership teaches that leadership is not about power—it’s about impact. True leaders lift others up, support their communities, and lead with humility.
A Leading the Way scholar:
- Leads through action, not just words
- Supports the needs of others when possible
- Demonstrates empathy and compassion
- Contributes positively to their environment
- Encourages and empowers peers to succeed
Our Standard
Together, these five tenets create the foundation of Leading the Way Academy. They guide how we teach, how we mentor, and how our scholars grow into leaders who are confident, capable, and community-minded.
At the center of it all is a simple belief:
Leadership is not something you wait for—it’s something you practice every day.
